Geographically, this area is renowned as a Robusta coffee producer. Situated 1,066 meters above sea level, it is hilly and with constant humidity year round. Kopi Sidikalang is regarded as the king of Sumatra coffee, long renowned as a prime Robusta bean producing region with high caffeine content of up to 80 percent. Over the last decade, Robusta from Sidikalang has faced stiff competition from Arabica growers. As international demand has shifted more towards Arabica lately, some growers have been thinking whether or not to continue growing Robusta. As consequence, Arabica has become the main commodity among coffee growers in their attempts to reap higher prices. Prices for Arabica beans are generally twice as high as for Robusta beans, with the former becoming ever more popular among individuals, cafes, restaurants and other establishments.
Roasted beansRoasted beansCoffee is best grown at altitudes of at least 700 meters above sea level. Interestingly, most of Sumatra's coffees are grown in areas 1,000 meters above sea level. Kopi Sidikalang is no exception and is considered to be on par with Aceh Gayo and Lintong Nihuta. Kopi Sidikalang is strong in aroma and taste, yielding a spiciness that is similar to Lintong Nihuta. It has low acidity with a chocolaty flavor and is best served brewed tubruk style — or simply black without the addition of
sugar.
